Insulation of steam turbines
Ensuring durable and efficient insulation requires special techniques.
Thermal-Tech uses one of the best insulation methods, namely the use of a dry mixture of mineral wool fibers, special cements and additives, which is sprayed on with a special pumping and spraying device.
The homogeneous and continuous sprayed layer of insulation ensures good insulation and soundproofing. The hard mineral coating, on the other hand, provides additional protection for the insulation against impact and mechanical damage. The additional protection of the outer shell with dispersion paints protects against the absorption of oils and other liquids.
Advantages of using spray insulation for steam turbines:
- prevents excessive heat loss;
- minimizes the expansion of the rotor and the cylinder housing, thus helping to optimize start-up times;
- protects operating personnel from burns when touching a hot surface;
- minimizes downtimes during maintenance work;
- reduces the ambient temperature in the machine room.
Spray insulation makes it possible to reach the hard-to-reach places in the construction of steam turbines. It is also worth mentioning that spray insulation can be easily combined with thermal insulation mattresses, as these can be removed without destroying the insulation and quickly reattached at the inspection points.
In addition to spray insulation, thermal insulation mattresses are used to insulate turbines in some projects. The turbine body is lined with two (three) layers of mattresses that adhere to each other.
The mattresses used to insulate steam turbines consist of silicone- or Teflon-coated fabrics filled with rock or ceramic wool.
Two insulation methods can also be used for steam turbines: Spraying + mattressing.
